Through Australia’s peak residential building and construction association, the Housing Industry Association (HIA), the GreenSmart program was established to promote practical, affordable and durable environmentally responsible housing, for residential design and construction.
The “GreenSmart” approach employs environmentally sustainable products and design to produce a home with increased energy efficiency and reduced water consumption. This approach also encourages better environmental management at each stage of construction and minimizes waste throughout the process.
Over the last few years, the Australian government has implemented mandatory regulations for water and energy efficiency ratings in the housing industry. These regulations have been rolled out in various stages across all states, with more to follow. This is a positive and important step towards environmental sustainability in the residential construction sector.
